Anonymous Group Mulls Campaign To Ouster Muskegon County Prosecutor

Evan Emory
An anonymous group is reacting (or perhaps overreacting) to a case of child pornography charges brought against a local man (Evan Emory) who edited and posted a video of himself singing sexually explicit lyrics to a class of first-graders. The group is contemplating a recall campaign  against the county prosecutor because they feel the charge was to harsh. The Muskegon County Prosecutor, Tony Tague, stated that the group was probably misinformed about state sentencing guidelines and went on to explain that a 20-year sentence was unlikely.

The anonymous recall group has not responded to requests for interviews and as of 3:00 PM Thursday, no one had filed a petition with the Muskegon County clerk’s office to initiate the recall process.

The anonymous group has been using Facebook to mobilize its campaign and sent out a anonymous news release that they “may be on the verge of moving forward with a campaign” contingent on some positive responses on its Facebook page. The group's page can be found here. It currently has 285 followers (or Likes).

This is another example of how people are using anonymity and anonymous messaging on Facebook and other social networking websites to express their opinions and try and affect change in their communities.

SW Virginia School Taking On Bulleying With Anonymous Email

Let's here it for "common sense!" A south-western Virgina high school has implemented a new program to tamp down on cases of cyber-bullying.  Kids and parents can use Facebook, an email, or fill out a form on the school's website to report concerns. If they prefer, they can do it anonymously. The initiative is called the "Safe Share" web program.

Officials have high hopes that it will be effective, because the reporting can be done anonymously.

A direct quote from TJ Slaughter, School Safety Coordinator was, "A lot of times they want to pass along information, but they don't know who to give the information to or they're afraid to pass along the information for fear of retaliation." This method of conveying information, that could help a kid or save a life, can now be communicated without the fear of getting in touble or getting caught in the middle.

Silent Sender applauds the Martinsville City Schools for their common sense approach to making the disemination of sensitive information easier and safer for the kids in their communities. Being able to send an an anonymous email or anonymous message is the key to getting more people to come forward.

Anonymous Facebook Goup Gunning For CNU President's Resignation

A Facebook page calling for the firing of Christopher Newport University President Paul Trible has been created by an anonymous user. It seems that the creator of the page is revealing (while not substantiated) the faculty’s intentions to move ahead with a vote of no confidence against Trible and Provost Mark Padilla. It is important to understand that a vote of no confidence by faculty members does not necessarily lead to resignation, instead it signals the faculty’s opposition to their leadership and agenda. At the very least, an embarrassing attack.

Facebook has proven once again it has a powerful voice. Similar to what we saw several weeks back with a Facebook group of anonymous followers referred to as the “Honour Revloution” (calling for citizens of Gaza to take to the streets and protest with the aim of toppling the government); this new group is empowered by anonymity. The anonymous members can voice their opinions and influence public opinion without the fear of retribution or personal attacks. The name of the Facebook page is “Christopher Newport-Faculty”.

This manner of communicating anonymously is becoming more and more common. As people realize the great power they have through anonymity they flock to social networking sites and the media to reveal opinions, secrets and scandals. While some prefer to send an anonymous message or simply hide behind an anonymous social profile, others still rely on the old tried and true method of sending an anonymous letter.

Biddy Basketball Saved By Anonymous Donation

Hard times have come to the Salvation Army and that means cutting back on programs for kids. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe- but even “red kettle” gang is making tough decisions that are going to affect our communities. The Salvation Army sponsored Biddy Basketball program in Wichita Kansas is being dropped so the organization can focus on other charitable services.

This popular program has been teaching kids not only the fundamentals of basketball; but more importantly, teamwork. This is why parents of team members have stepped in to try and save the program. Through their collaborative efforts they have secured an anonymous donor that may be able to partially or wholly fund the program and keep it afloat for at least another year. The long-term goal is to keep the price of an entire season very low.

This is another exceptional story of anonymity at its best. Whether it is an anonymous donation or sending an anonymous message to someone in need- anonymity continues to severe as an important tool for affecting change.

Anonymous Donation Makes A Difference

It's quite refreshing to see how the day-to-day applications of anonymity continue to positively change the lives of people. A Port Washington, NY man suffered a diblitating brain injury while working on an antique car in the summer of 2008. The hand-crank mechanism connected to the engine flew off and struck the man in the head. He suffered partial paralaysis and difficulties with speech.

He recovered enough to utilize a wheelchair but needed a specialzed brace that would help him as he relearned how to walk. The brace was not covered by his insurance company- and he was denied the brace. An anonymous parishioner from St. Ann's in Garden City, provided the money needed to buy the brace. The donation was given to the pastor and the brace was purchased.

The recovering man said he’s going to respect the donor’s wish to remain anonymous and will not attempt to track the person down but insisted that the next person who receives the Bioness brace continue to pay it forward in honor of the donor from St. Anne’s.

Anonymous messaging or anonymous tips don't always have to be used to solve or prevent a crime- but have an intrinsic value to society by creating the medium through which someone can take action without drawing attention to themselves.

Mr. Anonymous - "Please call us back..."

A Kansas City police department is requesting the anonymous tipster who provided information leading to the arrest of local man to “please call back” with more information.

The accused rapist has already been charged with 22 counts in connection with several rapes that occurred at the end of 2009 and into the early part of 2010. Police suspect the man was involved in additional sex crimes and authorities do not have enough information to charge him for those crimes.

The anonymous tips that lead to the arrest made the capture of this individual possible. Anonymity and the ability to send an anonymous message or call a tip line were pivotal in taking this dangerous criminal off the street.

Authorities involved in the case are asking the tipster to call back with information regarding a vehicle seen the night of Jan. 23, 2010. The tipster may call the TIPS Hotline at 816.474.TIPS. They may also contact the Kansas City Missouri Police Sex Crimes Unit at 816.234.5220.

Teen Wildlife Thrill-Kill Event Exposed

Officials at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently received an anonymous tip that a band of teen boys age 16-19 had been illegally and inhumanely killing wildlife for “fun” and were about to engage in another murderous spree. The alleged accounts of violence have been taking place for the last several years. One description of the way the teens dispatched the animals was to club raccoons to death and intentionally run down deer with their vehicles. The teens kept tally of their grizzly death count in efforts to best one another competitive fashion. Charges are still pending.

This is another example of “someone” always knows something. The fact that the resources were available for a tipster to come forward anonymously probably prevented further acts of cruelty. Wisconsin’s DNR issued a reminder that anonymous tips pertaining to this or other illegal or immoral acts can be submitted by anyone with information regarding DNR violations including suspected thrill kill instances by calling (800)-TIP-WDNR or text tips to 847411(tip411). Type in "TIPWDNR" followed by a space and then the tip. As always CRIME STOPPERS or SilentSender.com can be used to send an anonymous message.

Coalition of newspapers to discuss future of "anonymous comments"

A Washington state coalition of newspaper editors and reporters will host a forum to discuss the current and future impact of anonymous on-line commenting on news media websites. The forum will be made up of notable media experts from the Kitsap Sun, The Peninsula Daily News, the West Seattle Blog and the Port Orchard Independent. The discussion will focus on how the evolving impact of anonymous speech and commentary in the blog-o-sphere and media news sites will impact how the news is perceived by the public. A discussion on social discourse and what should and should not be allowed, as far as comments go, will be a highlight of the session.

The outcome of this event will be interesting to follow. It’s difficult to know if this is an attempt to accept anonymous speech as an inherent part of the way society interacts or if this is the beginnings of “anonymity management”.

Anonymous comments often offend other readers, while riling up others. If you haven’t experienced the flowery commentary of an impassioned anonymous blog follower- you probably don’t own a computer or smart phone. Most of us have seen the spew of emotional and reactive discourse that flows effortlessly from the mouths of emboldened bloggers and commenters. It is important that this element of our digital society not be squelched.

Anonymous messaging and anonymous email along with the ability to speak freely without being impaired by those who would not want fair and open discourse would strip the away the relevance of good reporting and the purpose of the media.

School District to "still" accept anonymous tips

A Florida school district has stated it will continue to accept anonymous tips to report illegal and illicit actions committed by its teachers and district employees. However, the district warns that while they will investigate ALL tips, “anonymous” tips will take the back burner because they do not have anyone associated with them to follow-up with.

A teacher’s school board member and the Teachers Association President for Hernando County felt that in many cases, investigating a teacher just because they get an anonymous tip may do more harm then good; to both teachers and students.

“Tips” are practically synonymous with anonymous. The definition of a “tip” is a piece of confidential, advance, or inside information. The act of tipping someone off is usually covert. Most people are unwilling to provide tips regarding illegal or illicit activity because they don’t want to get their name dragged into it. In this case- it almost sounds like the district wants someone else to place the blame on, instead of the accused. Giving anonymous tips a lower priority on the basis that there is no one to follow-up with is contrary to the point. The tip is being submitted because someone could be in potential danger.

It is important to give anyone the chance to defend themselves from any accusation. But it would be irresponsible to ignore the potential for harm from people that are trusted with our children’s well-being. There are plenty of good, responsible, kind-hearted teachers out there waiting to be hired or rehired. If we can shake out the bad apples with anonymous tips, so be it.

Parents and students alike should be aware of anonymous tips sites on the web such as SilentSender.com, where they can use anonymous messaging to get a tip to the school board or the school’s administrators.

Is anonymity becoming more mainstream?

An anonymous Facebook group is calling on Palestinians to protest against Hamas in the Gaza Strip tomorrow. The Facebook page titled “Honour Revloution” is calling for citizens of Gaza to take to the streets and protest with the aim of toppling the government.

Anonymity is becoming increasingly more acceptable as a “rallying cry”. When you (or a group of people) are anonymous, they have tremendous power and influence. The sound of one anonymous voice or many can have profound influence on people, especially when that voice speaks contrary to the status quo.

The members of the Facebook page, Honour Revolution, can send anonymous messages to each other and can communicate with groups and people on Facebook while protecting their identities because they setup their profiles with aliases. I don’t know if this is permitted by the Facebook Terms of Service agreement- but it is quite common for people to use fictitious profiles or alias while socializing on-line.

Why is this group remaining anonymous?

The members of the group undoubtedly have families in Gaza and fear that retribution would be brought against them or those families for inciting an uprising. Also, members of this page feel passionately about their cause, but fear reprisal or criticism from family, friends, co-workers, etc. Their anonymity gives them great power without the fear adverse consequences.

Anonymous Tip shuts down ICP Concert

An Insane Clown Posse (ICP) show in Southgate, MI was shut down by police due to an anonymous tip. Police could not provide any information on where the anonymous tip came from, whether from within Michigan, out of state or via internet.

Continue reading on Examiner.com: ICP show in Southgate, MI shut down by police

This is a fine example of some concerned members of the public stepping forward and doing what they should do to protect the underage patrons of this event. Police eventually identified approximately eight minors that were consuming free beer while enjoying the insane clowns pound each other into oblivion.

Anonymous tips, whether they come via anonymous email, anonymous messaging or an anonymous tip line do work. As long as the law enforcement community continues to protect the identities of tipsters, the public will remain comfortable about stepping forward with potentially life saving information.

Pay-to-play in Michigan

Some interesting news out of Lansing, MI today. Attorney General Bill Schuette (SHOO'-tee) has created a Public Integrity Unit aimed at stepping up the fight against corruption in state and local government.

The full story can be read here.

Shuette campaigned on fighting corruption in Michigan and now it seems he is taking action to do just that. Interestingly, he has put together an investigative unit to identify and crack down on corruption.

The only problem I foresee is the mechanism that is will be in place for the worker (or manager, partner, etc.) to safely report this corruption to Shuette's new corruption unit, the PIU (Public Integrity Unit). If the objective is to unmask players of pay-to-play schemes to make Michigan or more business-friendly state, then the system is going to have to be incredibly effective at uncovering existing and ongoing schemes.

My suggestion to the Attorney General would be to leverage some of the whistle blower resources that currently exist in the private sector, such as SilentSender.com . Have a disinterested third party playing "operator" between informant and the PIU would give Schuette's plan a chance at success. Anonymous messaging and anonymous mail should be utilized to communicate the nefarious activity. Public engagement is important- if people are too afraid or do not have enough incentive to police their own communities because of the fear reprisal- this new "Public Integrity Unit" will have to adjust its mandate and draw upon additional tax revenue to enhance their investigative arm.

While his intentions are good, and he is "seeing though" a campaign promise- pay-to-play schemes could easily be exposed by the willing public if equitably rewarded and proper measures to protect their identities were in place.

This is a perfect application for anonymous messaging.

Why is anonymous messaging so important in modern society?

Do we still have the right to speak, be heard and say what we think without revealing our true identity?

The simple answer is YES, for now.

Our First Amendment rights actually provide us with the ability to have a voice without a face. Oddly enough, as we witness the never ending erosion of our freedom of speech rights; there is an inevitable trend of holding people accountable for what they say and applying punitive measures should your statements not be politically correct. Or, God forbid, if you should insult some pragmatic individual or cause – it is likely a trial lawyer will come knocking at your door with a defamation lawsuit in hand.

There is no telling how much our government and “society” will tolerate as people continue to find the need to express concerns regarding infringements on their basic rights. But one thing is for certain, it is becoming more dangerous to speak your mind.

The Silent Sender team, and community, believes you should never fear speaking-up. Whenever possible, you should voice your opinion and concerns in person and out in the open. But there are occasions where SilentSender.com’s anonymous messaging services become an attractive alternative to putting your good name in the crossfire. Remember, you always have a voice- it’s what your voice proclaims that can put you into a potentially dangerous or uncomfortable situation.

We want you to be empowered to use your voice- speak out, speak up and do it with confidence, knowing The Silent Sender team is working to bring you new technology and new methods of protecting your identity while giving you the confidence to come forward with information that could change the lives of the people you care about or the community you dearly cherish. We are here for you, because we understand how important it is to exist without living in fear.

If you “feel” you should do something or say something about a potentially dangerous situation- you should. Follow your moral compass and allow SilentSender.com to deliver your concerns while truly protecting your identity. Whether you simply need quick and easy anonymous messaging to tip someone off or telegraph a concern you have about a friend or you need to send an anonymous letter with greater detail and picture – we are here to help. We truly care, because we are passionate about helping people, saving lives and giving you the tools to make an IMMEDIATE impact TODAY.
